Diesel Exhaust System

When diesel exhaust systems work well in removing gases caused by combustion from your car’s engine, it reduces dangerous emissions in the process – which makes exhaust systems a severe business of vehicles. Also, the exhaust system makes the engine run effectively and reduces exposure to dangerous gases.

The job of an exhaust system in your car’s engine is relatively simple. It moves combustion byproducts out of your engine while filtering out more toxic substances. It seems simple, but it requires coordination among many exhaust components. Unfortunately, the exhaust systems that come with cars don’t always produce the best results.

How Exhaust System Works

The exhaust system works as the exhaust manifold collects exhaust gases from the cylinder head in the engine. Then, the exhaust manifold will act as a funnel that will divert exhaust gases from all the engine cylinders and then release them through the front pipe. Lastly, the gases will pass through a muffler, resulting in a clean system that ensures your car runs smoothly.

Types of Exhaust System

  1. Single Exit Exhaust – This is a common type of exhaust system that has a single exit type. You can regularly find it in vehicles purchased from a dealer. This type of exhaust system typically comes out of the passenger side of the car. Despite being inexpensive to build and install, single exit exhaust might not be the most advisable, yet they are the economical workhorse of the industry.
  2. Dual Rear Exit – There are two exhaust pipes for this system, which are usually on opposite sides of the back bumper and do not typically bend near the wheels. These pipes are more efficient than the other exhaust systems since they function to expel a vehicle’s exhaust twice.
  3. Opposite Dual Exhaust – For this type, the exhaust pipes warp around the wheels. It is typical to have the presence of opposite dual exhaust in a vehicle that hauls heavy machinery, boat, or trailers. The pipes bend, so the exhaust gases stay away from the load – which means that there is no residue left. Moreover, this type of exhaust system is very efficient that gives the car additional power.
  4. Dual Side Exhaust – As you try to imagine two exhaust pipes next to each other on one side of the vehicle, that is a dual side exhaust. With is two smaller pipes, dual side exhaust is an efficient module that contributes to a deeper sound from the muffler. These types typically mimic those found in higher-performance vehicles without a considerable price bump.
  5. High-Performance Exhaust – This type of system is an aftermarket option due to its expensiveness and efficiency. The pressure in this type of system reduces because of its broader pipes that increase engine performance.

Designing an Exhaust System

  1. In Motorcycle – The exhaust system is visible for motorcycles, which is sometimes a display feature. The exhaust systems in aftermarkets are from steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, or titanium. The exhausts of a bike, depending on the type of engine and its intended uses, come in various varieties. The twin-cylinder in a motorcycle has independent exhaust sections that are optionally a single exhaust section.
  2.  In Trucks – Trucks often have an exhaust system with a vertical tube. Many trucks have the silencer enclosed in a perforated metal plate. It helps to protect anyone from being burnt when touching the hot silencer. This sheet can also be chrome-plated for display. The parts of the pipe that connect the engine and the silencing device are made of flexible metal. It is similar to industrial ducting, which reduces vibrations in the exhaust system. Sometimes, the large diesel exhaust pipes keep vertically to blow the hot noxious fumes away from the people. In such cases, the exhaust pipe end has a hinged metal flap to stop rainwater from getting inside.
  3. For Two-Stroke Engine – Two-stroke engines are most commonly used on dirt bikes. They have an exhaust pipe bulge known as an expansion chamber. This bulge created by the exhaust pressure makes a pump that pumps high amounts of fuel and air into the cylinder during the intake stroke. It is how you get more power and better fuel economy.
  4. Outboard Motors – The exhaust system of outboard motors is a vertical passage that runs through the engine. It reduces water noise and blows out underwater.

Exhaust systems may be extensive in their scope and detail. It’s best to leave modifications and maintenance like exhaust maintenance to professionals. Your vehicle will be smelling amazing.
